These are opinions based on years of hybrid repairs. Your mileage may vary. We specialize in NiMH battery rebuilding, and do not recommend the same reconditioning for Lithium chemistries. We see 14-21 years on average for the original Toyota NiMH packs in Minnesota’s cold climate.
2004-2009 Toyota Prius - This is the golden age of hybrid engineering. These models will average 300k-500k miles in their lifetime with limited overhauls and periodic maintenance.
2007-2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid - These models perform well until around 300k miles, when the 2.4L engine will loose compression or have worn out piston rings. Odd size 12v battery.
2010-2015 Toyota Prius - DO NOT BUY, or at least get a very good deal. The 1.8L engine has a reliability issue due to the head gasket failing. It is really hit or miss and very difficult to verify if you have a good or bad engine until it fails. The average repair for a failed head gasket is over $4k with an involved rebuild of the timing system, EGR system, and machining the head. This generation will not last due to the high repair bills.
2012-2017 Toyota Prius V - DO NOT BUY, or at least get a very good deal. The 1.8L engine has a reliability issue due to the head gasket failing. Brake accumulators were recalled for vehicles under 8 years or 150k miles. A lot of vehicles missed the recall. Check your VIN. Accumulator repairs out of warranty are $2k+.
2012-2019 Prius C - 20 module NiMH battery. Improved 1.5L engine from the 04-09 Prius. Overall a good buy for the money.
2012-2017 Toyota Camry & Avalon (2013-2018) Hybrid - 34 module battery, improved 2.5L engine. Overall a good buy for the money. Odd sized 12v battery.
2016-2019 Toyota Prius (Non-Prime) with 5th VIN digit of B - Same risk with the 1.8L engine, but has an overall lower amount of head gasket failures than the previous generation. There are LiIon and NiMH batteries available for this generation. We recommend NiMH chemistry for longevity in Minnesota’s cold winter climate.
2020-2025 Toyota Corolla Hybrid with 5th VIN digit of B - Same risk with the 1.8L engine, but has an overall lower amount of head gasket failures than the previous generation. Interchangeable with 4th generation Prius (16-19).
2019-2025 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid (Non-Prime) with 5th VIN digit of W - This Rav4 has a 34 module NiMH battery that performs better in our Minnesota winters. Avoid the lithium for longevity.
2021-2025 Toyota Sienna Hybrid - 40 module NiMH battery that performs better in our Minnesota winters.
2020-2025 Toyota Highlander Hybrid - 40 module NiMH battery that performs better in our Minnesota winters.
